Mail your Recertification Journal and objective evidence to Certification and Recertification Chair, Joe DeSimone at P.O. Box 1291; San Pedro, CA 90731.  Please allow 3 weeks for review.

How do I recertify? By Joe DeSimone

You have worked hard and months of studying and sacrifice have gone into your successful ASQ Certification. In order to maintain your certification, you are required to recertify every 3 years to maintain the same level of knowledge you demonstrated in your first exam. Your ASQ Certificate has a 3 year expiration date on it. There are essentially two ways to recertify:

Recertification Journal: Obtain a minimum of 19.5 recertification units during your three-year certification period. Document them in your recertification journal.

Examination: Sit for the exam. (Required if your certification expired and is past the six-month grace period).

Clearly, the first option is the way to go! (So, we will focus on this one).

When you received the “big envelope” from ASQ with your certificate (CQE, CQA, CRE, CSSBB, CMQ/E, etc…), you also received a Recertification Journal (which you may also download: Every three year period, you will record your recertification activities and RU totals and send the journal to the Certification Chair in your section (which happens to be me! more later…). You complete the following steps:

1. Review the Recertification Journal/Application. You may document your activities in your Recertification Journal/Application Note specific instructions on how to fill out the journal/application.

2. Earn Recertification Units. Recertification units can be earned for many different activities—professional development, employment, teaching, taking a course, attending meetings, etc.

3. Submit Your Completed Journal/Application or Recertification Application to the Certification Chair.

Your 19.5 RU’s will come from a combination of activities, namely 10.8 RU’s awarded for Employment. The remaining 8.7 RU’s will come from activities like attending the Los Angeles Section ASQ Monthly Member meetings (.3 or .6 RU’s), and attending or instructing Professional Development courses. Please also note that serving on an L.A. Section committee with net you 1.5 extra RU’s per year!

In addition to recording your RU’s in the journal, you will need to provide a copy of objective evidence for each of your RU activities. For employment, you will need a letter on company letterhead from your employer stating the time period of your employment. For courses, you will need a copy of a grade slip or certificate. For meetings, you will collect a certificate for each meeting signed by the certification chair. Whatever your ru activity is, please provide objective evidence and include it with your recertification journal. Please also remember to sign your recertification journal when you have completed it.

If you hold more than one certification, you will only need one set of 19.5 Ru’s and you can Synchronize your certifications and ASQ will pro date them accordingly. So, if my CQA is due in June 11’ and my CQE is not due until Dec 11”, I will send my recertification package in for the June date and Synchronize my recertification’s to cover the Dec 11” date also. So, ASQ will simply send you new certificates with the 3 year dates set from June 2011 to June 2014, and Dec 2011 to Dec 2014.

You also have a six month grace period beyond your certification due date. But, it’s best to plan to have your journal ready by the due date.

When your journal is complete, please mail it to:

L.A. Section Recertification

P.O. Box 1291, San Pedro, CA 90731

(Note: no need to send it fed ex or receipt signature required)

When I receive your recertification journal, I will review it and check for accuracy and objective evidence. If I have any questions, or need more information, I will contact you. I will then sign and approve it and send it directly to ASQ National in Milwaukee. As soon as I approve your journal, I will send you an email. When ASQ receives it, they will issue new certificates with new dates, and update your ASQ Member Profile. This entire process takes approximately 3 – 4 weeks.

It’s a great feeling of accomplishment to get certified. It’s also a great feeling when you receive that “big envelope” with your

new, updated ASQ certificate(s).
